This is a repeated topic talked about in esteemed business publications, motivational speeches, training programs, and performance reviews. As an Executive and Team Coach, it\u2019s what all my senior-level clients aspire to. Let me share some of the foundational principles, skills, and behaviors. (Note that this is not an exhaustive list, as some of the attributes of excellence will depend upon the industry and niche of the leader\u2019s organization.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Core Leadership Excellence Skills:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Integrity<\/li>\n<li>Open, transparent communication,\u00a0<em>both clear expression and fully open-minded listening\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Humility \u2013 see above listening skill<\/li>\n<li>Self-awareness<\/li>\n<li>Hunger for continued learning<\/li>\n<li>Empathy to relate to all stakeholders, especially employees<\/li>\n<li>Compassion \u2013 taking action to make a difference<\/li>\n<li>Nimble mindset \u2013 which allows nimble action<\/li>\n<li>Ability to coalesce a team<\/li>\n<li>Full commitment to build psychological safety: diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging<\/li>\n<li>EQ skills \u2013\u00a0<em>especially those related to navigating conflict\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Willingness to think \u201cfuture back\u201d when building a strategic plan<\/li>\n<li>A keen grasp of financial reports and constantly evolving market realities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This list could go on and on, couldn\u2019t it? I suggest, however, that it is more the person and mindset of the leader that is foundational for excellence, combined with the willingness to learn based on humility and integrity with empathy, knowledge, and compassion to do the right thing with the help of their team. Leadership excellence is \u201can inside job,\u201d but it\u2019s\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0a solo occupation.
